Book Review

Recent books I have read, my review on them and my opinion on whether or not you should read them…

  • Radical Reformission, Mark Driscol
(One of the most important books I have ever read. This book is for you if you honestly want to reach the people around you with the Gospel. Don’t read this IF you can’t handle thinking outside of the box and rethinking what you have always assumed to be true. This book was as eye opening as it was frustrating for me.)
  • Total Money Makeover, Dave Ramsey
(This book changed the way I think about money. I wish I had read this in college. This is one of the most important books on any level I feel you could ever read. This will lead you OUT of the American trend of spending above your means, drowning in debt, and not planning for the future. If you are having struggling with money, READ THIS BOOK. If you are good with money, READ THIS BOOK. If you are getting ready to go into the real world, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!)
  • Everyman’s Battle, Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker
(If you are a man, college age and up, this book is for you. This book focuses on striving for complete sexual purity and I don’t care how pure you think you are, what age or background you are, this book is a must-read. If you are high school or younger, try Every Young Man’s Battle.)
  • This Beautiful Mess, Rick McKinley
(The subtitle of this book is “Practicing the Presence of the Kingdom of God,” which describes the whole book well. It focuses on being a follower of Jesus and treating every second of every day like the Kingdom is here NOW! Living in obedience to King Jesus and not treating His Kingdom as if it were coming thousands of year from now. He went into detail using Kingdom parables Jesus taught with. You need to have a very open mind to read this. I couple of chapters I rather strongly disagreed with still learned a lot from the book as a whole. If an author loses you when he write something you think is wrong, don’t bother with this book. If you want a fresh perspective on Kingdom living, check it out.)
  • Confessions of a Reformission Rev, Mark Driscoll
(This is basically the ministry experiences of Mark Driscoll (Mars Hill Church in Seattle). There is a lot to glean from his ministry and a lot to laugh at in his writings. He is by far my favorite author, but he probably isn’t for everybody. He’s super blunt and straightforward, and doesn’t have time for fru-fru Christianity and religion. I appreciate that about him. This is a cool book if you hate religion to and like to learn from other guy’s ministries.)
  • The Shack
    (review to come…)

Hey Phillip! Man if you get a chance, read the book UnChristian by David Kinnaman. This book talks about the perceptions of the ones outside of the church looking inside. It hits on issues of hypocrisy, being judgemental, homosexuality, and being too political. David is like the President of the Barna Research Group. Great Book!

How are you and Jennifer doing? Talk to ya later!

Very good book. I’m finishing it up soon. I plan on starting “The Shack” next. That is definitely one you guys should pick up.

Jenn and I are doing great. How are you and the family? How is the ministry going?
