Hangin with the Millers

Posted by Phil on February 10, 2009

Jennifer and I got to hang out with Matt and Erica Miller this past weekend for Japanese food (Little Tokyo) and a movie. We watched “Traitor” with Don Cheadle. Very good movie with lots of twists.

We also had some Wii time. Turns out Matt isn’t a very good golfer, bowler, or boxer, but he can handle his own playing left-handed tennis.

Wii and cheesecake

Posted by Phil on January 31, 2009

Last night our good friends Dave and Becki Morton came over for dinner ( taco night) a little Wii gaming time, and lots of cheesecake. The best part, when we hang out with them, we get to hang out with their daughter Eden!

This was their first Wii experience so we got some cool pics. Eden is a great bowler by the way.

We got to test out two of Becki’s cheesecakes: blueberry/lemon and red velvet. They were stinkin amazing too! They have a cheesecake and photography business on the side that you all need to take advantage of. It’s called “Every Season Photography/Cheesecakes.”

Becki has a limitless supply of cheesecake recipes and has experience doing them for weddings and special events, so they are as good to look at as they are to eat!

Dave is the best photographer I know and is the guy responsible for the awesome pictures of me and Jenn I put up earlier. Plus, he’s really affordable, especially for the quality.

So if you’re looking to get some family pictures made or maybe some engagement photos, or you’re interested in some cheesecakes for an upcoming occasion, let me know and I’ll get you in touch with them.

October 82 Concert

Posted by Phil on January 11, 2009

Just got home from an awesome concert at Memorial Baptist Church in Norwood. The band? The one and only October 82, consisting of my good buddy (and the world’s greatest photographer) David Morton, and his good buddy George Something-or-Other (don’t know George or his last name, obviously).

Anyways, I love these guys’ music and so will you as soon as you go check them out. Here’s a link to their myspace page where you can listen to their first cd. BY THE WAY, if you want to buy their cd, you can pick it up at the Albemarle Christian Bookstore for only $10!

Here’s a picture of Dave and his awesome wife Becki by the way. Go check out his site and tell him to start blogging again.

Birthday Gift

Posted by Phil on January 2, 2009

So I turned 25 the other day. Freaky. Thats half-way to 50! I feel old. (no offense to anyone over 25…) Thanks Abby and Whitney for an awesome birthday gift! They beasted these 3 canvas paintings in a day to hang on my office wall. It’s hard to see in the picture, but they look really antiqued (crackle paint) and worn in. I’m highly impressed.

Thanks guys for the first thing I will be hanging on my office wall in 704 Student Center!

Gun racks and deer jerky

Posted by Phil on August 22, 2008

I went with Paul and his boys Parker and Will to a monster truck rally last Saturday night. Gun racks and deer jerky were the only things missing for the perfect redneck night.

Now I’m partial redneck in the sense that I like to fish, ride around with my dog in the front seat of my truck, go 4-wheelin, own a 12 gauge shotgun, and…well…that’s about it.

I am however partial metro-sexual too some would say because I have an eye for style, I am proud to carry a man bag, love shoes and jackets, love to cook good, elaborate food, and I typically sport a faux-hawk. I’m not going to link the term “metro-sexual” to any other sight for an explanation because they all make it sound like metros are borderline gay, which I assure you I am not. A metro is a straight, well groomed guy, with a good sense of style and maybe a few other stereotypical homosexual traits. I am only slightly metro.

Anyways, all that to say we were in the lion’s den of redneck nation Saturday and I was a bit out of my element. Nothing wrong with rednecks. I heart rednecks and they prove to be very useful in many situations. Plus, if we are ever invaded, it is the rednecks that will make the invaders sorry they tried it.

My “favorite” parts of the evening:

  • how the monster trucks were actually just a bunch of full sized pickups on huge tires
  • the way the trucks didn’t run over and destroy anything and basically just raced and did wheelies and donuts
  • when the “crash cars” (which didn’t crash. just raced) came out one time with trailers hooked to the back of them for the “Trailer race of destruction!”
  • one of the trailers had a port-a-john on it…
  • Super Bob’s Airshow! (some guy in an old Buick who drove about 30 mph through an old Winnebago)
  • the drunk guy that stood up the whole time throwing up a “hey!” with his right hand, constantly signing the rock on sign
  • said drunk guy throwing one up to all of the boy scouts the announcer welcomed to the evening
  • the announcer that sounded like Ray Romano from “Everybody Loves Raymond
  • there were a ton of huge billboards for the dirt track sponsors. one of the sponsors was Vienna Sausages (only at a monster truck race)

And my absolute favorite part:
Our seats were numbered, so we were in no rush to get their early. We arrived and found our seat, and directly in front of me was a topless Grizzly Adams. Paul’s son Parker sat next to me. On the dude’s left shoulder was the most explicit tattoo of a woman I have ever seen (not that I have ever seen any actually), but it was just terrible. And it was right in front of us. When Paul and I both noticed it (which only took a few seconds) we decided to move to some seats with a better view…

All in all the monster truck bash was enjoyable. Plus, I beat Will and Parker in a burping contest on the way there in extreme fashion! Thanks for the ticket, Blogging King!

beach bound

Posted by Phil on July 18, 2008

Well Jennifer and I are headed to the beach (North Myrtle) for a WHOLE WEEK tomorrow!  She’s working from 9-1 tomorrow, and I’m picking her up from work.  As soon as she steps foot in the car we’re off!  Well, I guess I’ll let her step both feet in.

We are staying from Saturday to Saturday and splitting a condo with some college friends, Clint and Rebecca Spicer.  The condo is on $525 for the whole week, combined! We’re getting a great deal and get to hang out with some cool people.  Clint works for Lowe’s Corporate and is one of the guys who hooked us up with the old Lowe’s building for the student revival early in the year.

We’ll be taking the laptop, so if there is internet access, I’ll be blogging like normal.  If not, see you in a week!

one bad cup of joe

Posted by Phil on July 14, 2008

So Paul and I were in the Norwood area for a meeting, and we decided to drop by Memorial Baptist and see Dave. We talked a little bit and I noticed a Starbucks travel mug on his desk. I felt compelled to take the lid off, and, wow. I’ll let this picture do the talking first:

The mug on the outside..

The mug on the inside…

The picture doesn’t begin to do it justice. The nastiness we found inside is beyond any nastiness I have ever created in a mug, container, etc. It looked as if there were little pathways that the fungi used to travel between mold colonies.

I’m just glad the smell was long gone or I probably would have puked. Go tell Dave whether or not you appreciate his mug!

Mobile cologne

Posted by Phil on July 10, 2008

Something strangely random happened today. I have been picking Jennifer up at the bookstore when she closes. I was sitting on the bench outside of the store talking to my best buddy and former college roomie Joe, when a girl driving by in her car stopped and shouted out from the window, “what kind of cologne do you wear?”

I had never heard of mobile cologne/perfume salesmen, but I guess there is a first for everything.

I of course told her I didn’t use any because I have a naturally pleasant scent. She didn’t really appreciate that too much I don’t think.

By the way, here’s the world’s most studliest picture of me and Joe (see above) at his wedding back in 2005. Can anyone say James Bond?
